ST's L99LDLH32 linear current regulator offers a convenient integrated solution for dynamic automotive lighting controlled using the CAN-FD Light protocol. Ideally suited for use with OLED lamps, this new driver delivers bright, uniform and high-contrast illumination over a small surface area, allowing designers to generate complex light patterns and effects for improved safety and styling.

The L99LDLH32 is monolithically integrated using ST's BCD9sL process and is AEC-Q100 certified. It is available in a 7mm x 7mm QFN48 package with wettable wings and exposed thermal pads to aid heat dissipation. The L99LDLH32 has 32 regulated current sources independently programmable from 1mA to 15mA to drive individual pixels in external and internal lighting applications. Global dimming with 8-bit resolution is also available. The drivers are powered by automotive battery voltage with output voltages up to 35V, covering a wide forward voltage range for light emitters.

A CAN FD Light integrated protocol handler and transceiver simplifies connectivity to the vehicle's communications infrastructure and control domain ECU (electronic control unit). CAN FD Light's synchronized commander/transponder communication is based on proven industry standards and is suitable for controlling simple devices such as lights and sensors, saving expensive external components such as timing crystals. On the other hand, the 1 Mbit/s data bandwidth enables designers to create complex animated light patterns and allows smooth modulation transitions and dimming.

In addition, the on-chip non-volatile memory allows parameters such as current level and PWM dimming to be programmed for stand-alone operation and provides a fail-safe mode to protect against communication bus or controller failures. The target applications for the L99LDLH32 include safety-critical lighting such as taillights, stoplights, and turn signals, with highly functional safety features. These functions include fault status pins, voltage and temperature monitors, programmable timeout watchdogs, and short-circuit and open-load detection. In addition, frequency dithering is optimized and electromagnetic emissions are minimized.
